Mindfulness and self-compassion
Mindfulness is an approach that focuses on consciously and non-judgmentally experiencing the present moment. By doing exercises, you can increase awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without needing to change them. Self-compassion is a next step for those who have experience with mindfulness. Self-compassion means being kind to yourself in the things you experience. Some people associate this with self-pity, but it's really something different. Being kind to yourself and creating more distance from your critical voice allows you to better tolerate the emotions you experience.
There are various apps and videos that provide guidance in mindfulness meditation exercises. As for self-compassion exercises, I am a big fan of the exercises and workbooks by Kristin Neff, an American Associate Professor in psychology. You can find free guided exercises on her website.
